Things are looking up! I did more types of things and more demanding things, though still slowly working back to my pre-shoulder-sprain level. Not there yet, but i did a bunch more favorite tricks without pain. Hah! and been going to the gym. The only little problem was, after a nice workout Monday, my abs were all sore and recalcitrant.

Sorry not to update in a while... While many of you have been enjoying your tomatoes or getting ready for Truck Packing Day, we've been in Boulder taking aerials classes! The Aerial Dance Festival to be exact. For far better blogging see our new friend [livejournal.com profile] turgid's posts. I especially like his pain and damage ratings.

Had a great time at the ENSMB show last night, the music was so fun and bouncy! The acts came together well and people seemed to like them, so the whole thing was a success! I was very impressed with the other performers and crew, and [livejournal.com profile] chillguru's ability to make it all happen. And so good to see the audience full of our friends. Wow.

I have quibbles about my number, which had a hitch near the end (that number got shorted on our practices in favor of the doubles routine and other stuff, i keep feeling it could have been so much better with more work- need to drill it more and work on the choreography), but the doubles part with [livejournal.com profile] frobzwiththingz came out really well! And it was just such fun to be part of it all.

ENSMB and some of the Madcap Rumpus Society will be doing a 30-minute bit at Wake Up the Earth festival in JP, May 5.

This is all much fun, but i do look forward to being able to go to more of *other* people's events soon, too! (pant pant)

Wow, I'm not sure whether it's from the rope swing or the pole, but I have Giant Purple Bruises on my right leg! ow. If i get to silk practice tonight I'll be doing all nondominant side knee hooks. Note to self: trying new apparatus while drunk can be... problematic.

Just got a note from a friend of ours who used to be an assistant instructor, and camped with us at Burningman! He's in Montreal in a circus!

He says:
"It's so much more comfortable here than in New York. The people are more friendly, its a lot cheaper, beautiful, much more European and the circus is amazing. I train between 3-5 hours a day, five days a week and I just recently started with a new trainer who is amazing. People come from all over the world to work with him. Circus in general is huge here, and its such a higher caliber than anywhere in the US."

Well, a few of us went up last weekend for a silks intensive at Elsie and Serenity's Nimble Arts in Brattleboro, VT. It was good! Different style. They are more used to working with gymnasts and dancers, and are sticklers for style, and really push you on the flexibility. I felt like the least flexible one there.

We started off with lots of stretching and warmups, then went thru the basics, correcting for style all along, and worked up to some stuff that was kind of difficult variations of things we'd done elsewhere (though the parts that were dificult were sometimes cause I didn't have the flexibility- they did provide "cheat" variations for those of us without full splits!). It was a mixed class, we were in the more advanced half (still about 11 people on 5 silks).

Over all, it was lots of fun, and really good to meet others from a wider area (NY, Boston folks we didn't know, Los Angeles)... and i really liked being challenged for 2 straight days of lessons. Need to do more like that!

P was going to do more technical write-up, once we go thru the videos. Now, need to keep stretching!!

To balance out the long hours spent sitting in a chair and hacking,...

Been going to the gym about twice a week lately... not ideal, but better. Going back up in weights to my old levels. Now getting some stares/comments from the guys, to the effect that few women seem to actually expend effort to lift the most they can... i mean, why not?? There are a few more women these days lifting more-than-tiny amounts, but still not the norm. It's not like you will suddenly be plagued by giant unwanted muscles, girls, trust me...

In other news, doing Stairmaster too. Used to hate aerobic exercise, but getting used to it now. Kind of meditative. The gym has solved their horrible-radio problem and subscribed to the High Energy channel... much better (odd range of techno, rock, hip-hop, and seventies/eighties dance music.) Still need to bring earphones and music, as the gym's music doesn't pipe past the whirring of the treadmill area.

Tempted to bring a silk to hang off the chinup bars... pity they don't give us access to the 30-foot metal ceiling trusses. I wanna do hip-key practice. Maybe from the livingroom ceiling...

new tricks

Well i didn't practice the new drop P was showing me, but i did do a bunch of strength exercises, and wound up getting the meathook!!

This is where you hang upside down from 2 hands (flagged), split silks: key over one arm into a pike, release other hand, hold, then replace 2nd hand, go upside down again, repeat on other side. I remember watching Cypher doing it and thinking i'd NEVER be able to do that. Now, practice practice, and start doing it while in motion!!

I'm really quite sore now in the arms and back. Yay!!
